On Assignment | Sam Muyaka | 225

When I heard I was going to be photographing a young Baton Rouge rapper, I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I was surprised that I would be meeting him at his school.

From the moment I walked in to photograph Sam Muyaka, I knew it was going to be a good shoot. Sam was polite and a little quiet, open for whatever kind of background we could use for the shoot. We chatted as we searched for locations, as well as while I took photographs, and I learned a little bit of his story. We ended up canvassing the school for about an hour, shooting in hallways, in the studio, in the cafeteria and on an iron stairwell outside of the school.

Muyaka’s debut album, Determined, was recorded during his summer vacation. He considers himself a minister, not a rapper, and he performs at churches and in concert halls.

Check out his story, y’all. You’ll be inspired.
