Kevin Berthelot, owner of Southern Dovetail Woodworks, talks about his woodworking and designs on Mon., Nov. 21, 2011, before the Pelican Woodcarver’s Guild meeting at BREC’s Sharp Road Park. One of the fun things about working at an arts and entertainment magazine is that I get to meet all kinds of artists in my daily work.
Kevin Berthelot was no exception, and I had the best time listening to him talk about his art – woodcarving. While he spoke to the reporter, Daryl, and me, I snapped some images of him working on a decorative piece. And when the interview was over, he asked both of us if we wanted to try our hand at his craft.
We both declined, but it is always exciting to meet someone who is so enthusiastic about their craft that they want to teach others.
And that is exactly what Berthelot is doing. If you have any interest in learning about woodcarving (and happen to live in Baton Rouge!), the Pelican Woodcarvers Guild is displaying their work and giving free training to kids this Saturday (Jan. 28, 2012) at the Greenwell Springs Library, Room 2, at 10 a.m. For more information, give Berthelot a call at 225-978-2722.
