Can y’all believe another week has come and gone?
Me neither.
Here are some of my favorite things from around the internet this week. Feel free to share yours here, too!
Photography
- Winners from the 2011 National Geographic Photography Contest have been announced!
- French photographer Joe Bunni swam with and photographed polar bears in the Arctic Ocean. Up close. Woah.
- Jasper James’ city silhouette portraits are utterly unique and stunning.
- I’m not usually one for turning black and white to color (or vice versa) because it looks hokey, but these famous B&W images with color breathed into them are beautiful.
- Scott Bourne has made his case for prime lenses. I agree… but their lack of flexibility is their downfall for me. What about you?
- “If you get afraid of making mistakes, you are toast.” Thanks for the reminder, Chris Johns. (Editor, National Geographic Magazine)
- If you’re going to Vegas for WPPI, please sign up to hang out with Justin and Mary. Their two events sound fantastic!
- LOAA hosted a fantastic coffee chat about finding creative inspiration and keeping it.
- “Sick of It,” written by Yan of Yan Photography, really struck a chord with me because there have been many times where I have felt the same way in my business. The honesty of her writing blows me away.
- Photographer Angelo Merendino‘s photo story on his wife’s battle with breast cancer brought me to tears and left me feeling haunted. This is one of the many reasons I want to embark upon a few photo stories – to tell the stories when words don’t do them justice.
Odds & Ends
- As you should know, I am a huge Harry Potter fan. And because of this, I think my home needsthese HP prints.
- This list made me laugh because it’s super true: 10 more reasons why freelancing isn’t for you.
- Hello. (If you haven’t seen this, you’ve been missing out. You’re welcome.)
Happy weekend, everybody!
@RunBimma - The HP prints are awesome!!
Renee - Those B&W photos in color are really beautiful but there’s something so striking about a B&W photo… and so historically significant that the versions in color seem almost cartoony, you know?
Chris - I’ve actually been thinking very, very seriously about dumping my zoom kit (24-70/2.8 + 70-200/2.8) for a pair of fast primes (35/1.4 + either the 135/2 or the 100/2.8L macro). I already have a 50/1.4, so that gives me a good standard-length lens.
I like primes for the same reason Scott likes primes, but I really like primes because they’re *fast*. I find myself in a lot of situations where f/2.8 just doesn’t cut it, I don’t want to push the ISO past 3200 or whatever, and I can’t reasonably use a flash.
I think that I actually enjoy shooting more when I’m using my 50/1.4, so I don’t know. Losing the 70-200 isn’t a big deal to me (I don’t use it nearly as much as I thought I would), but I don’t know if I want to give up the 24-70. :-/
First world problems, eh?
Katherine - How have I not yet seen “Hello”? Fantastic. I also loved the photographer’s blog post about struggling in the business right now. Great points, and brought a tear to my eye.
Thanks for sharing great stuff, as always.
alexbee - OK I am SERIOUSLY considering buying those Harry Potter prints! They are so awesome!! Thanks for sharing! 🙂
kim - the amount of people who think freelancing is for them when it’s really only for a few very disciplined people just cracks me up. OH I CAN DO THAT! Really? It’s just THAT easy? Not really…
