On Assignment | Battle Royale III Breakdance Competition | 225

One of the fun things about my job as a freelance photojournalist is that I never really know what I’m going to be doing next.

I’ve covered 100th birthday parties. (I’ve even attended a birthday party for a rhinoceros.) I have documented protests, funerals, weddings and anything and everything in between.

This breakdancing competition was one of those fun next assignments that was sent my way this past summer. While I have never been a dancer (or shown any skill whatsoever when it comes to busting a move), I can definitely appreciate the artistry and creativity that goes into it.

I was blown away with what I saw at the Battle Royal III Breakdance Competition in July.

Jairun Diemert, of the team called Beyond Kings, dances as the crowd looks on during the Battle Royale III Baton Rouge Breakdance Competition at Flips and Fitness on Saturday, July 30, 2011. Teams of two competed against one another in a bracket tournament until one team was left standing. (Erin Parker)To read more about the breakdancing competition, check out Alex Cook’s article here.
